Our Objectives
About Us
The Rotary Safari for WASH Fellowship is a transformative initiative by the Rotary Club of Gayaza, designed to merge the joy of travel with the power of service.
Born from a deep concern for the dire WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) conditions in Uganda’s public primary schools (UPE schools), this project offers Rotarians and friends a unique opportunity to explore breathtaking destinations while fundraising to provide clean water, improved sanitation, and hygiene education to vulnerable learners.
We believe that a child who has access to clean water, safe latrines, and basic hygiene has a far better chance at staying in school and completing their education.
What We Do
Improving Access to Safe, Clean Water
Access to clean and safe water is foundational to a child’s health, dignity, and ability to attend and succeed in school. However, many UPE schools lack this basic right. We address this through:
Installing Water Harvesting Systems & Boreholes
We establish reliable sources of clean water through rainwater harvesting setups or borehole drilling—critical infrastructure that supports safe drinking water for learners and staff.
Monitoring Water Quality
Routine testing ensures water safety, aligning with standards to prevent waterborne illnesses.
Enhancing Sanitation Infrastructure
Over 70% of Ugandan schools lack adequate sanitation facilities. This contributes to student absenteeism, especially among girls. Our sanitation interventions include:
Constructing and Renovating Latrines
We upgrade the infrastructure to transition from basic pit latrines to hygienic, waterborne alternatives—ensuring strength, cleanliness, and longevity.
Creating Gender-Sensitive and Inclusive Facilities
Separate latrines are provided for girls and boys, with additional provisions for learners with disabilities, including design elements that prioritize privacy, safety, and accessibility.
Promoting Hygiene Education and Practices
Clean water and latrines alone aren’t enough. Sustainable hygiene behavior is critical in preventing disease and creating a culture of cleanliness in schools. We work with schools to:
Installing Handwashing Stations
Infrastructure includes handwashing points—using cost-effective, accessible tools like the Veronica Bucket—to encourage regular use.
Conducting Education Sessions
We provide regular training on best practices, including handwashing with soap, menstrual hygiene management, and proper sanitation behaviors for students and teachers.
Fostering Sustainability and Community Engagement
Training for School Staff & Community Members
Building local capacity ensures regular maintenance and management of WASH facilities, helping extend the lifespan of interventions.Community Mobilization for Behavioral Change
Engaging parents, leaders, and broader community stakeholders supports hygiene culture and ensures accountability.
Transforming Learning Environments
In Eastern Uganda, health clubs supported by GOAL and Charity: Water built latrines—including ones with incinerators and improved attendance significantly, especially among girls who were previously absent due to lack of facilities during menstruation.
Our Unique Approach: Safari-Driven Fundraising
Participants engage in hands-on service projects, such as refurbishing schools or implementing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives in local communities.
Membership of the Rotary Safari for WASH Fellowship
Unlike traditional fundraising methods, we use adventure and fellowship as our platform for impact.
Each year, we organize a fundraising safari trip, bringing together Rotarians and guests to:
Explore Uganda’s top natural and cultural destinations
Bond over shared experiences and the spirit of service
Learn about WASH challenges firsthand
Contribute directly to solving WASH issues in a selected UPE school
Why Our Work Matters
Uganda has made significant progress in increasing school enrollment. However, without safe water, proper toilets, and hygiene education, many children—especially girls—drop out or fall sick frequently.
We are bridging this gap by:
Reducing dropout rates, especially among adolescent girls
Improving academic performance and concentration
Preventing waterborne and hygiene-related diseases
Promoting dignity, safety, and confidence in learners
